DescriptionPCI-SIG® has adapted and expanded the PCI Express® (PCIe®) specification roadmap to meet the needs of systems in a wide range of market segments like Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud, enterprise, PC, embedded, IoT, automotive and mobile.
The PCIe 6.0 specification is on track for a 2021 release and will offer many important feature upgrades. New features include PAM4 encoding and Forward Error Correction (FEC), while the specification will also preserve its low-latency characteristics required for a Load-Store interconnect and full backwards compatibility.

The PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 specifications—reaching 16 GT/s and 32GT/s transfer rates respectively—are currently being adopted across the industry in data demanding applications. Both generations of PCIe specifications offer these systems substantial savings regarding cost and power. As the PCIe 4.0 specification continues to be adapted by a variety of companies, PCIe 5.0 technology is also working its way onto the mainstage of the interconnect industry. While each PCI Express specification improves upon previous generations, all PCIe specifications provide unparalleled speeds, low latency and performance enhancements for the world’s top systems.
