DescriptionEven with decades of product development experience, the team continuously revises the new product introduction (NPI) process to maximize product innovation and alignment to client needs.

Rapidly increasing computing power and connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices drove significant new potential deployment options and new client needs. This required more flexibility and more depth of experience.

To achieve those competing objectives, we required cross functional NPI teams to include the following specialties:
-Electrical and mechanical engineering
-Manufacturing engineering
-Operations
-Quality assurance
-Tech support
-Finance
-Purchasing
-Sales

We also used a phased gate approach to progression of the development process, to ensure review from all potential perspectives. The phases chosen were:
-Concept
-Design
-Design verification and validation
-Operations validation
-Phase and project final review

The last change the team made to the process was requiring the entire NPI team to agree before a product could enter the next phase gate.

This final structure of the NPI process was the result of a great deal of testing and optimization. The result achieved its objectives of client need alignment and opportunity for innovation without slowing down the development process.
