DescriptionSide channel attacks like correlation power analysis (CPA) are very effective in breaking cryptographic engines. We present a power obfuscation switched capacitor (POSC) DC-DC converter to conceal side channel power consumption leakage. It works by adding an extra phase to the conventional switched capacitor converter. We evaluated the design by analyzing the power supply to an Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) unit powered by the proposed converter. CPA fails even with 50 times more power traces than needed to break an unprotected AES unit. The POSC has an efficiency of 77% compared to the 90% efficiency of a conventional two-phase converter.
