Optical and Thermal Simulations for Integrated III-V/Si Heterogeneous Lasers on Silicon Photonics System

DescriptionHeterogeneous III-V/Si lasers are attractive and maturing on-chip light sources for silicon photonics. The marriage of III-V materials with a low-loss silicon substrate enables not only the missing optical gain functionality on large-scale silicon wafers, but also enables more design freedom for innovation. In the meantime, challenges in seamless optical modal transmission from the heterogeneous laser cavity to output silicon waveguides as well as thermal management need to be well studied using advanced EDA simulation tools. Here we discuss our design focus on these two aspects using multiple versatile Lumerical/Ansys toolsets, and share actual use case examples on heterogeneous microring lasers and comb lasers for our high-performance computing business.
