SUMMARY:Cloud Infrastructure for Remote and Scalable EDA Hardware Training
DESCRIPTION:Designer, IP and Embedded Systems Track Poster Networking Rece
ption\n\nCloud Infrastructure for Remote and Scalable EDA Hardware Trainin
g\n\nJones\n\nHerein, we describe the results of a pilot program between N
otre Dame and CMC Microsystems to enable EDA tools from a cloud-based plat
form. First, we describe the initial success of an undergraduate High-Leve
l Synthesis (HLS) course, where students completed their design flow on an
Amazon AWS EC2 cloud-hosted infrastructure to construct and administer th
e Cadence Design Systems applications without the need for any additional
hardware. Next, we discuss how the infrastructure simplified the transitio
n between on-campus learning and remote learning necessitated by the COVID
-19 pandemic. We show how use of the CMC-enabled cloud-based infrastructur
e addressed many challenges faced by universities forced to conduct remote
sharing of the student servers through virtual private networks. Next, we
demonstrate the scalability of this platform by presenting the results of
the HLS tutorial at the Design Automation Summer School, which was comple
ted by over 200 students worldwide in July 2020. We will present evidence
of the success of the Notre Dame HLS course as well as the DASS HLS tutori
al through student post-assessment surveys. The success of the pilot progr
am shows a rapid, reliable, secure, and scalable platform for EDA training
and education with significant potential for improving access to underrep
 resented students.\n\nVirtual Program: Presented In-Person
