SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Stress Testing to Survive an Industrial Gas Turbine
DESCRIPTION:Designer, IP and Embedded Systems Track Poster Networking Rece
ption\n\nCANCELLED: Stress Testing to Survive an Industrial Gas Turbine\n\
nMcNamara\n\nA client that designs and manufactures industrial gas turbine
s for onshore and offshore electrical power generation, marine propulsion,
and for producing/processing/transporting natural gas and oil needed a ne
w computerized monitoring system. \n\nWhile the architecture of a ruggedi
zed edge computing system was familiar to the team, the extremely hazardou
s location where the ruggedized panel PC would be located made testing an
unusually critical element of the process. \n\nThanks to significant expe
rience in working with military-grade environments, the design team knew r
igorous testing would be a long-term benefit. While its painful to watch d
esigns fail, catching failures early on typically speeds up the client rev
iew and acceptance process and leads to a better end result. \n\nTo ensure
success, the design team focused on gathering data and optimizing the arc
hitecture. Two key elements were: \n-HALT: Finding the weakest links in th
e design \n-HASS: Ensuring consistency and design margin \n\nBoth HALT/HAS
S processes were useful and effective, but the team found they are not pan
aceas. They realized that the validation, test, and verification process s
ometimes requires additional types of testing, as well as more flexibility
in design parameters.\n\nVirtual Program: Presented In-Person
