DescriptionSmart robotics developed in various shapes are becoming more popular and have been used for diverse applications. A smart robot is a complex information processing system that incorporates inception to sense, cognition to understand, and decision to act. In real-world scenarios of smart robotics, computational resource and energy budget are restricted, while real-time and low-power solutions are always essential. This brings severe challenges and opportunities for the VLSI and computing community. To enhance the sensing/understanding/acting abilities of smart robots, the cross-level collaboration are the must including sensors, processing units, algorithms, robotics platforms and design automation tool chains. This special session presents representative efforts in addressing these challenges with multidisciplinary projects, ranging from novel sensors and their near-sensor computing circuits, efficient algorithms of sensing and motion control, and design automation methods during deploying on specific hardware platforms. The invited talks will lead to promising cross-layer solutions towards real-time energy-efficient smart robotics.
